The Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences at Tsinghua University (referred to as the Institute of Interdisciplinary Information) was established in 2011. It is led by Mr. Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, the recipient of the highest award in computer science, the "Turing Award," an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a foreign associate of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States. The institute aims to cultivate top innovative talents with international competitiveness in the interdisciplinary field of information.

The research areas of the Institute of Interdisciplinary Information cover three major cutting - edge directions: computer science, quantum information, and artificial intelligence. It has also carried out extensive interdisciplinary integration with multiple fields such as economics, manufacturing, healthcare, and finance. Meanwhile, the Institute of Interdisciplinary Information has been deeply exploring the cooperation models between industry and research to promote the application of scientific research achievements in the fields of artificial intelligence, quantum information, and financial technology, thus supporting the development of important national basic industries.

The Institute of Interdisciplinary Information covers several top - notch talent - training programs and scientific research institutions. Among them, the Tsinghua Xuetang Computer Science Experimental Class (Yao Class), founded in 2005, is acclaimed as the benchmark of "the best undergraduate students and the best undergraduate education", and has won the first prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award and the Special Prize of the Beijing Teaching Achievement Award. The Tsinghua University Quantum Information Center (CQI), established in 2011, has become a vital frontier base for global quantum information research.

Since its establishment, the Institute of Interdisciplinary Information has built a strong faculty team led by Academician Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, including 32 high - level talents introduced from overseas. As of January 2024, the Institute of Interdisciplinary Information has trained more than 600 undergraduates, 167 doctoral graduates, and 85 master's students. Among the graduates, more than 60 have taken up teaching positions at top international universities, and a number of entrepreneurial leaders have also emerged.

Academician Andrew Chi-Chih Yao said, "The science of the future lies at the intersection of disciplines." Looking ahead, the Institute of Interdisciplinary Information will continue to be committed to solving the most pressing basic technological and application problems of the times, serving the major national development strategies, and striving to achieve the goal of building a world - class research institution in the field of interdisciplinary information.
